Surrounding National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty:

Our farm is in the parish of Smardale and our surroundings are peaceful and unspoilt. The Smardale Gill National Nature Reserve is a short walk from here, but also has a free car park and is well worth a visit.

There are many fells and tarns with spectacular views to explore such as Wild Boar Fell, Nine Standards Rigg and Sunbiggin Tarn.

The Byre is located in a tranquil and unspoilt part of Cumbria.  Situated in the Upper Eden Valley, we are nestled in a golden triangle between two of England’s most beautiful National Parks and an Area Of Outstanding National Beauty.

Kirkby Stephen is 2 miles away and is a small market town with a good selection of shops, cafés, pubs and takeaways.  The town is on the famous Coast to Coast walking route, and Kirkby Stephen railway station is on the historic and scenic Settle-Carlisle railway line.  Steam trains also run through the summer.

Further afield are other market towns of Appleby (9 miles), with its famous horse fair, Hawes (20 miles), with the Wensleydale Creamery, Sedbergh (18 miles) to browse the many bookshops, and Barnard Castle (26 miles); all of which are all worth a visit.

Penrith and Kendal are also close by, (approx. 25miles), for even more choice.

Groceries:  Kirkby Stephen has a good-sized Coop supermarket as well as two Spar stores.  There is also a green grocer, a butchers, bakery and delis in the town, offering local and international produce.  Market day is on Monday and there is a fresh fish van which trades in the market square on Wednesdays.

Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Asda, all deliver to the door as well.
